Bollard Crash Test Ratings: K4, K8, K12, M30, M50 Explained (2026 Guide)
What Are Bollard Crash Test Ratings?
Bollard crash test ratings are standardized measurements that certify a bollard's ability to stop a vehicle of a specific weight traveling at a specific speed. These ratings are essential for security planners, architects, and facility managers who need to protect perimeters against vehicle-borne threats.
The two most widely recognized standards are IWA 14-1 (international) and ASTM F2656 (American), which classify bollards into different rating levels based on vehicle impact energy absorption.
Understanding K-Ratings: K4, K8, K12
Under ASTM F2656 and the older DOS (Department of State) standard, K-ratings measure a bollard's ability to stop a 6,800 kg (15,000 lb) truck. The number indicates the vehicle speed in mph that the bollard can stop:
K4 Rating (M30 Equivalent)
Stops a 6,800 kg truck at 48 km/h (30 mph). This is the entry-level anti-ram rating suitable for low to medium-risk sites such as retail parking lots, office building perimeters, and public plazas. K4-rated bollards typically have a penetration distance of less than 1 meter after impact.
K8 Rating (M40 Equivalent)
Stops a 6,800 kg truck at 64 km/h (40 mph). This mid-tier rating is appropriate for government buildings, data centers, airports, and critical infrastructure. K8 bollards provide enhanced protection with penetration typically under 1 meter.
K12 Rating (M50 Equivalent)
Stops a 6,800 kg truck at 80 km/h (50 mph). The highest standard rating, designed for high-security facilities including embassies, military bases, and nuclear power plants. K12 bollards must maintain a penetration distance of 1 meter or less after impact from a heavy truck at highway speed.
M-Ratings: IWA 14-1 Standard
The IWA 14-1 standard uses M-ratings that correspond to different vehicle types and speeds:
M30 - 6,800 kg vehicle at 48 km/h (equivalent to K4)
M40 - 6,800 kg vehicle at 64 km/h (equivalent to K8)
M50 - 6,800 kg vehicle at 80 km/h (equivalent to K12)
How to Choose the Right Rating for Your Facility
Selecting the appropriate crash rating depends on your threat assessment and risk profile:
K4/M30: Commercial properties, retail centers, parking structures, schools
K8/M40: Government offices, airports, stadiums, data centers, hospitals
K12/M50: Embassies, military installations, nuclear facilities, critical national infrastructure
