The perimeter is the whole security model for a building with no windows and no front door, and the threat is mundane: an unauthorised vehicle parked at the gate, a delivery driver who wanders, a protester who drives in. A data center cannot be a soft target at the kerb, and a bollard is the cheapest hard edge it will ever buy.

Inside, the security is world-class; outside, the gate is often a wooden post and a sign. That gap is where the risk lives. A raised post cannot be parked on, driven through or argued with, so the facility edge stops being a suggestion and becomes a line.

Facilities get hardened while still running, and a trench through a live compound is a hazard.
