Top 10 Questions Before Buying Security Bollards (Answered)
Jun 18 , 2026

When you are planning a bollard installation, whether for a commercial parking lot, a government building, or your own driveway, a dozen questions come up. We have gathered the ten most common ones and answered them here.

1. Do I need a permit to install bollards?

It depends on where you live. In most cities, bollards on private property do not require a permit. But if the bollards go on a public sidewalk, within a right-of-way, or in a historic district, you probably need one. Always check with your local planning department first.

2. How deep should the foundation be?

bollard

A typical bollard foundation is 300 to 600 mm deep and 400 to 600 mm in diameter, filled with reinforced concrete. Crash-rated bollards need deeper foundations, sometimes over 1 meter, because they must absorb enormous impact energy without failing.

3. How long does installation take?

A single automatic bollard takes one to two days with a professional crew. The bulk of the time goes into excavation, pouring concrete, and waiting for it to cure. Surface-mounted bollards can be installed in a few hours.

4. What is the difference between automatic and manual bollards?

Automatic bollards retract into the ground with a button press or remote control. Manual bollards, including removable and fold-down types, need someone to physically unlock and move them. Automatic systems cost more but are far more convenient for high-traffic entrances.

5. How much power do automatic bollards need?

Most electric models run on standard single-phase 220V or 110V power, drawing between 300 and 750 watts during operation. Hydraulic units have a separate pump station that may need a dedicated circuit. Standby power consumption is negligible.

6. Can bollards work in cold climates?

Yes, if they are built for it. Quality bollards use low-temperature hydraulic fluid rated to -30 C or below, and the housing includes a heating element to prevent ice buildup. Always check the operating temperature range before buying for a cold region.

7. What happens if the power goes out?

Most automatic bollards include a manual override. You can use a hand pump or release mechanism to lower the bollard manually during a power failure. Some systems also support battery backup for short outages.

8. What is a crash rating and do I need one?

A crash rating like PAS 68 or ASTM F2656 tells you what vehicle weight and speed the bollard can stop. If you are protecting a government building, airport, or critical infrastructure, you need crash-rated bollards. For a residential driveway, a standard heavy-duty model is usually enough.

9. How often do bollards need maintenance?

Hydraulic bollards should be serviced every six months. Electric bollards need less attention, typically an annual check of seals, wiring, and the control board. Fixed bollards need almost no maintenance beyond occasional cleaning and rust inspection.

10. Can I install bollards myself?

Technically yes, for a simple fixed bollard. But for automatic bollards, professional installation is strongly recommended. The excavation, electrical work, and alignment need to be precise. A poorly installed bollard can jam, leak, or fail when you need it most.
