Drainage-Free Bollard Installation: How Sites Cut Time and Cost
Jul 23 , 2026

The biggest hidden cost of an automatic bollard is not the unit. It is the hole. Most heavy-duty bollards need a foundation 800 to 1130mm deep, a gravel and sand seepage layer, and a dedicated drainage pipe, or water pools around the mechanism and destroys it. UPARK's drainage-free design removes that entire step, and with it most of the risk that makes bollard projects run late.

What a traditional install really involves

bollard

You excavate to roughly 1.1 meters. You lay 20 to 30mm of pebble and sand as a water-percolation bed. You embed the bollard, then run a drainage pipe and seal every wire joint with waterproof tape so vapor does not creep in. Finally you pour concrete while keeping the unit perfectly still. It is a multi-day job per cluster, in good weather, with a drainage plan that has to work for the whole life of the product.

And the drainage pipe is a liability long after install. It clogs with silt, it freezes in cold climates, and when it fails the mechanism drowns. We have been called to sites where a blocked drain turned a premium bollard into a dead post within two seasons. None of that exists when there is no drain to begin with.

What drainage-free looks like

Shallow foundation, no drainage pipe, no gravel bed. The mechanism is sealed to IP68, so standing water is not a threat. A two-person crew sets a line of bollards in a fraction of the time. For sites with a high water table or poor natural drainage, coastal ports, riverside plazas, rainy-climate campuses, this is not a nice-to-have. It is the only sensible option.

The cost math favors it

Fewer trades on site, no drainage contractor, less excavation, less concrete, less downtime for the entrance being worked on. Across a ten-bollard pedestrian zone, the saving on civil works alone often beats any difference in unit price. And there is no drainage pipe to clog or freeze in year three. Pair the approach with a 36V low-voltage drive and the electrical side stays just as simple.

The saving also shows up later. No drain means no scheduled drain maintenance, no winterization, and no emergency call-out when a pipe bursts. Over a five-year horizon the drainage-free unit is usually the cheaper one to own, not just to install.

Where it pays off most

Historic streets where you cannot dig deep. Tight urban curbs. Sites that cannot afford a closed entrance for days. See the Automatic Bollards line, or combine with Fence Gates for wider vehicle openings that need the same easy-install logic.
