A Crash at a Gas Station Is Not Just a Fender Bender

Every year, thousands of vehicles crash into gas stations around the world. Most of these are low-speed incidents where a driver misjudges the distance to the pump, hits the accelerator instead of the brake, or gets confused in a crowded forecourt. The vehicle damage is usually minor. But the consequences can be anything but minor when you are surrounded by thousands of liters of flammable liquid.

When a vehicle strikes a fuel pump at speed, the impact can shear the pump from its mounting, rupture underground pipes, and ignite spilled fuel. The resulting fire can engulf the entire forecourt, the convenience store, and nearby vehicles within seconds. Fire suppression systems at gas stations are designed to handle small fires, not the kind of inferno that a ruptured fuel line can produce.

The human cost is also significant. Customers pumping gas, convenience store staff, and bystanders are all at risk. A single distracted driver can cause injuries, fatalities, and a media story that destroys the station's reputation and triggers lawsuits. Insurance companies know this, which is why bollard installation is increasingly factored into risk assessments and premium calculations for fuel retailers.

Where Bollards Should Go at a Gas Station

Fuel pumps are the most critical protection point, but they are not the only one. A well-designed gas station bollard layout covers several key areas.

Each fuel pump island should have bollards at both ends and, for longer islands, at intermediate points. The spacing between bollards should be tight enough to prevent a standard passenger car from passing through but wide enough to allow pedestrians to walk between them. A common specification is 1.2 to 1.5 meters between bollard centers, which blocks vehicles while maintaining pedestrian flow.

The convenience store entrance is another high-priority location. Stores at gas stations are frequently positioned close to the forecourt, making them vulnerable to vehicles that jump the curb. A curved arrangement of bollards in front of the store entrance creates a shield that absorbs impacts and deflects vehicles away from the building.

Air and water stations, EV charging points, propane cylinder storage, and the payment kiosk area all deserve their own bollard protection. Each of these represents either a hazard (propane, electricity) or a customer congregation point (payment kiosk, charging area) where an impact would have disproportionate consequences.

At the site perimeter, particularly where the gas station borders a public road, bollards protect against vehicles that leave the roadway and enter the forecourt at speed. These perimeter bollards need to be more robust than the internal ones, since they may need to stop a vehicle traveling at highway speeds rather than parking lot speeds.

Choosing the Right Bollard Type for Fuel Retail

Not every gas station needs the same bollard solution. A small rural station with two pumps has different requirements from a large highway service area with 20 pumps, a restaurant, and a truck stop.

For most fuel stations, fixed bollards are the practical choice. They are always in position, require no power or maintenance beyond occasional cleaning, and cost a fraction of automatic systems. Steel bollards with a powder-coated finish in a visible color like yellow or orange serve a dual purpose: physical protection and visual guidance that helps drivers navigate the forecourt safely.

Removable bollards work well at service vehicle access points where delivery trucks need to occasionally enter areas that are normally closed to traffic. The bollard is locked into place during normal operations and removed with a key when access is needed.

Crash-rated bollards are generally not required at gas stations unless the site is in a location where high-speed vehicle incursion is a realistic threat, such as a station on a highway off-ramp. For the vast majority of forecourt applications, standard steel bollards with a wall thickness of 5mm or more and a concrete-filled foundation provide sufficient protection against the low-speed impacts that account for most incidents.

Regulatory Pressure and Insurance Benefits

In many countries, gas station safety is moving from voluntary best practice to regulatory requirement. In the United Kingdom, the Petroleum (Consolidation) Regulations 2014 require fuel retailers to assess the risk of vehicle impact and implement appropriate measures. Similar requirements exist or are being introduced across the European Union, Australia, and parts of North America.

Even where bollards are not legally mandated, insurance companies are increasingly requiring them as a condition of coverage. A gas station without fuel pump protection is seen as a higher risk, and that translates directly into higher premiums. Some insurers offer premium discounts of 10 to 20 percent for stations that install compliant bollard systems, which means the bollards can pay for themselves within a few years through insurance savings alone.

For gas station owners and operators who have not yet installed protective bollards, the math is simple. A bollard installation is a one-time cost. A single fuel pump fire caused by a vehicle impact can run into millions of dollars in property damage, environmental cleanup, liability claims, and lost business. Bollards are not an optional upgrade at this point. They are basic risk management.
