The autumn holiday asks a retractable fence gate to do two opposite jobs. Before you leave, the entrance is busy and the gate opens and closes more than usual. Then, for several days, it sits almost untouched, wet from autumn rain, with nobody watching it. Because an automatic retractable fence gate lives underground, small problems stay hidden until the moment you need the gate to move. A short check before you travel is the simplest way to avoid coming home to a gate that will not budge.

Why a pre-travel check pays off

Our retractable fence gates are built to be close to maintenance-free: aluminium alloy and stainless steel, an electromechanical drive, and key components placed above the base so they can take the rain, backed by a drainage system. Close to maintenance-free is not the same as never checked. The parts that do wear, the track, the drive shaft gears, and the main motor gear, wear quietly, and the pit is the one place where a little housekeeping goes a long way.

The pre-travel checklist

Set aside about thirty minutes and work through the following. It is the same list our engineers use on site.

Track lubrication. Wipe the running track clean and apply the recommended lubricant. A dry or gritty track is the usual reason a gate starts to sound rough.

Drive shaft gear lubrication. Inspect the gears on the drive shaft and lubricate them as specified. This is the point where a little grease prevents a large repair.

Main motor drive gear. Do the same for the gear on the main motor. These three lubrication points are the heart of a smooth cycle.

Water pump and drainage. Run the pump and confirm the pit is dry and draining normally. A slow drain is easy to ignore in summer and impossible to ignore after a week of autumn rain.

Pit cleaning. Remove silt, leaves, and debris from the pit. Debris is what slowly steals the gate's travel and loads the motor.

Cover plate cleaning. Clean the cover plate and clear the drainage slots so surface water has somewhere to go.

Emergency power. In a power failure the gate can still be lowered using the emergency supply. Confirm this works before you leave, so a grid fault during the holiday never traps you at the entrance.

Controls and safety. Raise and lower the gate, stop it part-way, and confirm it responds cleanly and halts where you ask. The gate is designed to stop at any point, and remote operation should feel immediate.

Surface and finish. Look over the painted surfaces for scratches or chips. The finish is an automotive paint over a sandblasted surface, so a small touch-up now is easier than a repaint later.

Facility notes. Finally, write down anything the guards or staff have mentioned, such as a gate that occasionally sticks or a noise that appears in the cold. Noting it now means it can be fixed in a single visit.

While you are away

Before you lock up, decide the state you want the gate to be in while the site is empty. For most entrances that means raised, so the boundary stays closed. If heavy rain is forecast, make sure the pit is clear and the pump is healthy first, because a flooded pit is the one condition the gate cannot shrug off.

When you get back

On your return, run the gate through a full cycle before the morning rush. Clear any debris that has collected, check the pit again, and listen for anything that was not there before. If the gate hesitates or runs on, stop it and arrange a service visit rather than forcing it.
