Back-to-School Safety: How Automatic Bollards Protect School Drop-Off Zones

Every August the same scene plays out outside schools. Doors open, parents arrive in a tight window, and a calm street turns into a scramble of reversing cars and walking children. Bollards will not fix bad driving, but a well-placed row of posts removes the space where the two worlds collide. That is a cheap, durable way to take risk out of the busiest ten minutes of the day.

The morning drop-off problem

The danger is not the speed, it is the mix. A child stepping out between two parked cars is invisible to a driver three metres away. Paint and signs help, yet they do nothing when a parent double-parks and blocks the walking line. A physical post stops a vehicle from entering the footpath in the first place, which is far more reliable than hoping everyone reads the markings.

Think in layers rather than one barrier. A run of fixed posts sets the permanent edge between pavement and carriageway along the gate frontage. An automatic post opens at 8 a.m. and closes after the bell with no guard on duty. Card readers, loop detectors or a simple timer run it, and the same control can log every opening. Low voltage matters near children

School grounds are exactly where a buried high-voltage cable feels wrong.
