Fixed, Removable, or Automatic Bollards: How to Pick the Right Type for Each Zone
May 07 , 2026

Most perimeter security projects use a mix of bollard types, not just one. The trick is knowing which type goes where. Put an automatic bollard where you need daily vehicle access and a fixed one where nothing should ever pass through. Removable bollards fill the gap for occasional access needs. Getting this mix right saves money and avoids the frustration of over-engineering some zones while under-protecting others.

Fixed bollards are the simplest type. A steel post set permanently into a concrete foundation. They cannot be moved, lowered, or removed without cutting and demolition. This makes them the strongest option for permanent vehicle exclusion. A fixed bollard has no moving parts, no electronics, and no maintenance beyond occasional cleaning. For long stretches of pedestrian areas, building perimeters, and permanent traffic separation, fixed bollards do the job at the lowest cost per unit.

UPARK offers the UP-A002 fixed bollard in 304 stainless steel with a 219mm diameter and 6mm wall thickness. The 6mm wall is thicker than what many competitors use at 3mm or 4mm, which makes a real difference when a vehicle actually hits the post. There is also a decorative version, the UP-A005, with a slimmer 114mm profile and a polished 316 stainless finish for locations where aesthetics matter more than stopping trucks.

Removable bollards are for places that need to be open to vehicles sometimes and closed at other times. A delivery entrance that is locked after hours, a parking lot that becomes a pedestrian plaza on weekends, a fire lane that emergency vehicles use but everyone else should stay out of. The bollard sits in a ground socket when installed and can be lifted out with a key or wrench when access is needed.

The main trade-off with removable bollards is weight. A heavy-duty removable post like the UPARK UP-A003 weighs about 60 kg. Lifting that out of a socket requires physical effort, which is why some sites choose lighter posts for frequent removal. The lighter option at UPARK is the UP-A004 at about 15 kg, much easier to handle but with less impact resistance.

Automatic rising bollards are for zones that need controlled vehicle access multiple times per day. The post is flush with the ground when lowered, allowing vehicles to pass, and rises to block traffic when activated. Control options include remote control, RFID readers, license plate recognition, keypad, and integration with traffic light systems. An automatic bollard from UPARK rises in 5 seconds and lowers in 3 seconds on DC 36V power, which is fast enough for most commercial and institutional applications.

bollard installation

The practical approach is to divide your perimeter into zones. High-traffic entry points get automatic bollards. Pedestrian-only stretches get fixed bollards. Occasional access points get removable bollards. A typical shopping mall layout might use two automatic bollards at the main vehicle entrance, a row of fixed bollards along the storefront, and two removable bollards at the loading dock that delivery trucks need during the day.

Cost follows the same logic. Fixed bollards are the cheapest per unit, roughly a third to half the price of automatic ones. Removable bollards fall in between. The installation cost of automatic bollards is higher because they need electrical conduits and a control box, but the labor savings from not having staff manually move removable bollards every day can offset that quickly for busy sites.

A mistake some projects make is using only one type. All-automatic looks impressive on a drawing but wastes money on zones that never need to open. All-fixed is cheapest but creates access headaches when a delivery truck or maintenance vehicle needs through. The best perimeter designs mix all three types based on how each zone is actually used, not on what looks most uniform in a specification document.
